The Butajira Rural Health Program (BRHP) was established as a collaborative program between the Department of Community Health, Faculty of Medicine, Addis Ababa University and the Division of Epidemiology, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Umea University (Sweden).  After its establishment in 1986, demographic surveillance has been going on within the ten study villages, in addition to various studies that also include other villages of the district.
